Today was field day at our three oldest kids’ school. Tommy, Joel, and I tried to follow the big kids as they rotated with their classes around the field, blacktop, and gym, but it got to be too much after awhile so I let them attack the playground equipment. Sometime while playing, Tommy removed his socks and shoes.
I told him to find his socks and shoes so we could put them back on. He scrambled up a ladder and disappeared into a tube. An acquaintance’s son found Tommy’s socks and shoes and handed them to me through holes in the tube. A few feet away two little feet poked through. How cute! I thought as I snapped pictures and told the feet to stay right there!
I unfurled the balled socks to put them on the little feet. I started putting one sock on, then it occured to me if I put the shoes on, his feet may not fit back through the holes. I told the footsies to meet me at the bottom of the slide. I turned around.
Tommy was standing right behind me, looking at his shoes expectantly. It was suddenly clear what I had been about to do. A boy in an orange t-shirt appeared at the bottom of the slide. He was barefoot.
I wonder if he ran off to tell his mom some weird lady was trying to put shoes on him?

HA! And somewhere out there, there’s a woman with a blog writing about the weird lady who tried to put socks on her child.
“Like her kids NEVER go barefoot!”

I think this is so funny to me because it is TOTALLY something that I would do! Only I would have actually put the socks on (at least – if not trapped some other lady’s kid by also putting the shoes on) and some kid with my kid’s socks on would suddenly appear and start screaming because it is so gross to have someone else’s socks on.
Rather than be labeled as either a freak or an airhead, I’d have to abandon the socks rather than admit it was me.

Ha ha! Oops. 🙂
I’ve worried and fretted over various things that can happen to my kids at the playground, but the possibility that a stranger might accost them with socks and shoes that aren’t theirs has never even occurred to me. I’m waiting for the 20/20 piece that this will inspire: “Assault on Bare Feet: Mothers Overstepping Playground Boundaries.” I bet John Stossel will cover it.
Oh! The embarrassment would haunt me for years. Because I’m neurotic that way.
It reminds me of that urban legend about the woman thinking it was her husband in the shower, only it wasn’t. But in a clean way.

ROFL – I remember standing at the bottom of a McDonald’s playground when my son was about three, SCREAMING at him to come down right now because it was time to go and I’d already told him a dozen times to come out of the play area, and all he was doing was hunching down behind one of the nets and staring at me, and everyone’s looking at me more and more like I’m the psycho parent they’re all glad they’re not, and then I feel a tug on the back of my shirt and my son says, “I’m RIGHT HERE, mommy!”
Your story and the fact that you, too, keep a fish on your dining room table makes me feel just a little less crazy.
