The Germans love him

Ryley is enthralled with R2-D2. He draws pictures of R2, dreams about R2, and wanted to spend money from his recent birthday on anything R2 splattered. Luke Skywalker? Darth Vader? Who are they? To Ryley, “Star Wars” is R2-D2’s story, slam that book shut.

Last night Ryley and I were sitting on the couch. I was listening to him talk about R2 when he asked this question:

“Daddy told me an actor sits inside R2 and makes him move. Is that true?” he asked, grimly.

“Yep, it’s true.” I answered with that cocked-head-I’m-sorry look on my face.

“Is it David Hasselhoff?”

“Is it David Hasslehoff?” Where did that come from??

Oh too funny. Glad the humor still flows like winemilk at your house.

  • Mom-of-mopsy

Just trying to picture David Hasselhoff scrunched up inside R2-D2 is way too funny!

  • Heehee that is too funny! I’m with your mom, picturing David Hasselhoff squished in the little robot is giggle inducing!

  • Ba ahahahaha! That’s hilarious! Would it really make a diff if it WERE DH?

  • Shayne

Oh gosh that’s so funny! Where do kids come up with this stuff?

  • R2 is in every episode, so I can see where little Ryley would think he was the essence of Star Wars 🙂 It wouldn’t be a true Star Wars episode without R2 and C3PO. Oh! The name of the man who occasionally sits in R2 is Kenny Baker 🙂 R2 is usually “remote control,” but anytime you see him shake from side to side, that’s Kenny Baker at work.

I love seeing children get just as excited about Star Wars as we did when we were little kids when it first came out!!! YAY Ryley!!!! MTFBWY! 🙂

  • David Hasselhoff? Where did that come from? LOL

  • LOL. How does he even know who Hasselhoff is? Either you’re letting your son watch old episodes of Knight Rider or Baywatch, and I’m not sure which is worse.

    That’s hilarious!

  • I’m betting on Knight Rider, which I thought was one swell show–the only one we were allowed to stay up for on Friday nights! And when I was a kid, R2 was also my hero; that is, until Yoda waddled onto the scene. I wonder if kids are just drawn to the characters who are nearer their own size. “Judge me not by my . . . “

  • Without R2, they would all be dead and evil would have prevailed. He saved the day so many times. A true hero. Good choice Ryley.

It’s been fun reading the speculation on how Ryley knows David Hasselhoff. We don’t let him watch “Baywatch” reruns or even “Knight Rider”.

But we do let him watch “Spongebob”…David Hasselhoff appears, as himself, in the Spongebob Squarepants movie. He helps Spongebob and Patrick get home.

The girls at work are obsessed with “The Hoff” as we call him. Though this is not the exact site – here is one “Hoff” thing we love – the calendars (may not be appropriate for Ryley’s eyes!)

I do think that is one of the funniest things I have heard come out of a kids mouth!!!

  • Oh yeah, I remember that part in Spongebob–which, honestly, makes it an even more bizarre comment. I mean, if it was Hasselhoff from Knight Rider he would at least be connected with talking machinery . . . but in SB, all he does is swim, doesn’t he?

Laura—it is less about David Hasselhoff’s wide range of abilities and more about the fact Ryley thinks “actor” = David Hasselhoff. Had Al Pacino been in the Spongebob movie playing himself, he would have wondered if Al Pacino was inside R2.

    Crazy kid.

I cannot believe how fast he moves through fads! Last week at his birthday party it was “Spongebob-this” “Spongebob-that”.

Though being a Star Wars nut myself, I have to appreciate his current facination!

Now that I think about it. Ryley is right. Star Wars is all about R2-D2. He is by far the most important character. He saves everyone’s hide a number of times thoughout all the movies. The entire collapse of the Empire can be directly attributed to R2. I won’t take the time to spell it out here….

  • True story: I think when I was Ryley’s age I might have been enthralled not with R2-D2, but rather with David Hasselhoff. And now that I think about it, he and R2D2 may share similar characteristics…

  • ROFL…and to think, he wasted all those years on Baywatch when he could have folded himself up into a nice little package and been in Star Wars!

  • One of the first movies I remember seeing in a theatre. I, of course, loved Princess Leah with the cinnamon-bun-do but R2D2 and C3P0 ran a close second. I see why he is fascinated with R2D2. He is a cool little dude!

  • Congrats! You have been nominated for a blog award at One Woman’s World. Come on over and nominate some of your favorite women bloggers.

  • That made me laugh out loud. I laughed again when I told my husband. He laughed too. Thanks!
