The robin’s nest is empty.
The three baby birds are gone, and so is the unhatched egg.
I’m amazed they lasted as long as they did, considering the ludicrous location of the nest.
They were utterly defenseless if their mother was away, searching for food. I suppose any nest of baby birds is equally vulnerable, but these robins never stood a chance.
Why did I allow myself to hope they would flourish and fly away? Probably because of the location. Probably because their lives weren’t logical to begin with. When odds are defied so magnificently, I can’t help but think I’m being set up to witness a miracle.
Not this time.
That makes me so sad. (((HUGS))) Stuff like that always affects me for days. :o(

Aw… when I was pregnant with Gray, we had a bunny make her nest right in the middle of our back yard. And we had three dogs. I did not understand why in the world she would make a nest in the very home of a predator! Why not right outside our fence? Anyway, since I was exceptionally maternal I did my best to protect that nest but eventually the Mama just stopped coming to her babies at all. It is still something I get sad about.

This has happened to us a couple of times. It is hard when you have been cheering them on to live and flourish, then wake up one day to an empty nest, knowing they didn’t leave because they had learned enough to fly away. Maybe it hits too close to home…
I am sorry:(

Sometimes life is encapsulated in something small and seemingly insignifigant. I have been feeling that way myself these days. I have big prayer requests, and when the little miracles fail to happen I become discouraged and lose hope for the big ones. But He has promised greater blessing on the other side of trials – and I must choose to trust Him and believe that what He has promised He will do.

I’m sorry. How sad. We had a mama robin build a nest in a wreath right on our front door this year. We used the back door whenever possible for weeks.
Our three baby birds had about a week of life before. One morning, I stepped outside and saw that the wreath was somehow on the ground, the nest was upside-down next to it, and the babies were about two feet away on the mat. The babies were intact, so they hadn’t been attacked. I have no idea how this scene came to be, but it was so sad. We buried them in the back yard with a little popcicle cross.
I had hope for them too. I even thought this post would be about how you saw them flying away or something lovely like that.

Oh no. 🙁
A few weeks ago, we were out with the kids in the backyard, when our son discovered a dead baby bird. It was such a tiny thing, mostly bald with just a little fluff. My husband removed it, and the kids continued to play, although our son was sad about the bird and asking lots of questions. A few minutes later, we discovered another. We started combing the grass then, and found a third. Something must have happened to the nest; the tree they had fallen from has branches high above the roof, so we didn’t even know there was a nest up there. It was really a devastating sight, nonetheless.
I’m sorry about your baby birds. Are your kids very upset?

Perhaps you did witness a miracle? Perhaps those baby birds, as sad as it might sound, were the life-sustaining meal for a small carnivorous animal? I know that few people like to think of baby animals as food for other animals, but it is the circle of life… No death is an end. There is a purpose for everyTHING… We just won’t always know what it is.
