Years ago I read if you take the number of cricket chirps in a given amount of time, then plug the number into a formula, you can accurately estimate the outside temperature.
I theorize the same principle applies in winter. When you let your dog out at 6am, time how long it takes her to pee. Then, when she comes back to the house, count the number of frantic scratches at the door you hear in five seconds.
It took our dog 2 seconds to pee. She scratched at the door 249 times in 5 seconds. Because I might find myself defending my thesis in front of an international board of mathy-types someday, I will keep the formula I developed a secret for now. But it is dead right:
-13 below this morning.
The dog knows.
That’s brilliant! Who says we English majors can’t do math? Well, besides my father… and my mother… and my kids…

If it’s negative thirteen below, does that mean it’s actually positive thirteen?
I know it’s not nice to rib the pregnant woman, but I couldn’t resist, as a homeschooler. Although I truly believe math is from satan.

My kind of math!
Eeesh! Can you believe it, it is 65 freakin’ degrees here in Virginia today. We pine for winter. Well, actually, we pine for weather that is consistent enough that we only need to have one season’s worth of clothes out at any given time.

I think it depends on the dog. Mine is a Labrador she lives for the cold. Now, I admit it is only 16 here, not -16, but she loves the leisurely strolls out there this time of year. She is completely befuddled that we love taking her for walks in the summer when she hates being outside and we cower back when it is this cold and she wants us to play fetch in the back with her. Poor dog. She should have been born in Alaska.
