Berthe was my great-grandfather’s wife and Vera was her sister. They were French women.
I do not know the year, I do not know the city, but I think New York when I look at this photo.
I wish I knew more about it.

What a great photo! It’s so unusual to see BW photos where the subjects aren’t posed. The ladies here look like they were walking, the photographer jumped in front of them, and captured their jaunt down the city street. Amazing.

Cool photo. I agree it’s neat to see a candid shot. The sign in the background appears to say “scientific___” I can’t make out the last 4 letters. Maybe that could help you figure out the exact location. Rob loves figuring stuff like that out.
What a great photo! I love it! I agree with Amy; it looks like it says “scientifically.” Very cool!

I kind of wish we still dressed like that. Except I do love my jeans.

These are definitely your kind of women. Not sure how I know it, just do.
Or maybe it’s the pain medication talking.

So I was all excited to find a clue to the photo location in the reversed word on the awning behind them.
Until I discovered (through my grunt work) that is said “Scientifically.”
Not such a great clue, then.

Amy, Kelly, and JoAnn—I too tried to figure out the word, thinking it was some restaurant or nightclub that was hugely popular in 1930s/early 40s (just guessing) NYC.
But no.
Scientifically.
What a great photo! In this day and age, it is hard to believe that is real. Looks like it is straight out of a movie. So cool, what a treasure. But I wish you knew more history.
